Digital Storytelling: A Review of Ch. 13 -17

Ch. 13

Over the last quarter century digital storytelling has been applied to numerous contexts. What makes this possible is that human expression has made its way into every context. To keep this going we must find a way continuously apply the arts of digital media use and supporting each other's storytelling.

Ch. 14

Silence Speaks has a unique way of offering survivors of any form of violence, a personal space of healing through digital storytelling. Through imagery, videography, and production, Amy found a way to produce content that encourages healing and courage for these survivors. Silence Speaks take these digital stories to audiences as a way to promote anti-violence.

Ch.15

Digital storytelling has expanded into public health communication. Native American communities have become engaged in working to overcome the health disparities between their own and the larger culture. Laura, a community outreach health worker in Tribal Health, uses her love for technology to bring awareness and communicate/share knowledge.

Ch. 16

Digital Storytelling has also become important to humanizing healthcare. Pip & Tony say DS provides three sides of a reflective prism:

1. The opportunity for the viewer to reflect on his or her own experience

2. Storytellers can reflect on their own life experiences and consider the most effective way to convey their stories

3. As facilitators, we can reflect on our practice and down life experiences.

The above is what makes it possible for DS to be so powerful and thought provoking.

Ch. 17

Digital storytelling has found a way to introduce transformative learning. Brooke believes it is a research tool in documenting personal and professional transformation. It is all about the passion and changes that come with experience and that is how we can relate DS to education.
